Last year at Rob & Alida’s old house in Bramfield we discussed the government’s "Opportunities for Change" consultation document, and sent our views to the DETR. A Sustainable Development Strategy is due for publication in early 1999.

The DETR have produced another consultation paper, "Sustainability Counts", on a set of ‘headline’ indicators of sustainable development. However, the closing date for comments on this was 29th January.

The proposed indicators are:

Education & training
Qualifications at age 19
Housing quality
Homes judged unfit to live in
Climate change
Emissions of greenhouse gases
Economic growth
Total output GDP
Social investment
Investment in public assets (transport, schools …)
Employment
People in work
Health
Expected years of healthy life (still being researched)
Air pollution
Days of air pollution
Transport
Road traffic
Water quality
Rivers of good or fair quality
Wildlife
Populations of wild birds
Land use
New homes built on previously developed land
Waste
Waste & waste disposal
